Prologue: The road to Kellee winds through the heart of Tepest, where the trees loom tall and the underbrush whispers with unseen movement. The summer air carries the scent of wildflowers—sweet, intoxicating, yet cloying in a way that lingers too long in the lungs. Birds sing, but their melodies are strange, like voices just on the edge of understanding.
Word has spread of the Festival of the Verdant Veil, a grand midsummer celebration held once every seven years. Travelers speak of endless feasting, wild revelry, and strange customs where outsiders are welcomed as honoured guests. Some call it charming. Others refuse to speak of it at all.
In the village of Kellee, the preparations are already underway. Woven garlands of crimson and gold flowers hang from every post. Bonfires are stacked high, waiting to be lit. The people smile easily, their eyes bright with anticipation. But beneath their warmth, something lingers—an unspoken urgency, as if the festival is more than mere tradition.
